Since its inception in 2021, the GDR Rift organization has committed itself to structuring, coordinating, and invigorating collaboration within the French scientific community dedicated to the Great Rift Valley. While we do not directly manage or fund research projects, our core mission is to foster interdisciplinary studies that unite French researchers and their East African counterparts, ultimately deepening our understanding of the intricate eco-geo-socio-system that defines the East African Rift.

The Rift, a fascinating and multifaceted phenomenon, raises an array of scientific, political, and social questions. This rich tapestry serves as fertile ground for interdisciplinary collaboration, allowing us to explore the complex interplay between humanity and the Rift ecosystem across significant timeframes.

However, defining the Rift object is not without challenges within the GDR. For scholars in the social sciences and humanities for example, the Rift object often feels elusive and without intrinsic reality. Additionally, certain key concepts can vary in meaning across disciplines, creating further complexity. In light of these insights, what innovative strategies can the GDR committee adopt to nurture a truly collaborative interdisciplinary environment?

In this presentation, we will conduct a thoughtful review of our actions, highlighting those that have achieved success during our first mandate while also unveiling new initiatives we aspire to cultivate over the next five years. Our goal is to enhance collaboration and international engagement within our community.

We will delve into vital topics such as establishing a common language, fostering international connections, providing effective training, engaging in shared fieldwork, and addressing pressing scientific challenges.
